Area Rugs
How to Shop for your Area Rug:
Area rugs enhance the décor of any room in your home. They are also highly functional home furnishings that can protect floors, deaden sound and cushion your feet. There are several factors to consider when shopping for an area rug, especially when faced with as many choices as you have from Rugs For Sale.
Color:
Most people begin their search for an area rug by focusing on color. A rug adds new colors to a room, unifies existing colors and serves as a unique focal point. A light-colored rug can instantly make a room seem larger. A dark rug helps create a cozy atmosphere. A rug with exquisite detail can function as artwork for the floor.
Remember that a rug doesn’t need to exactly match the colors in the room, but it should coordinate with at least one of them. Burgundy is a popular color for traditional area rugs because it coordinates with so many color palettes. But don’t be afraid to try other, more vivid colors if the style reflects your room and décor.
Shape and Size:
Room and furniture groupings tend to be rectangular in shape. Thus it’s no surprise that the vast majority of area rugs bought are also rectangular. A round or octagonal rug can be used to add interest and flair to a room, while an oval can define a special space or accent a particular furnishing.
Living Room – The most common sizes to place under a coffee table or a furniture group are 4’ by 6’ and 6’ by 9’. Be sure that all of the furniture’s feet will sit on the rug. It can be interesting to use multiple rugs to further the space, so long as they coordinate properly and the patterns do not clash.
An 8’ by 10’ or larger rug can be used to cover an entire room. Just be sure you leave at least 8” to 10” of space between the edge of the rug and the wall. Put furniture coasters under the back legs of any furniture that is placed against the wall to raise them to the height of the rug.
Dining Room – Most dining room tables need at least an 8’ wide area rug. Be sure the legs of the chairs don’t fall off the rug when people are seated or pulling the chair out. As a rule, add 4’ to the length and width of the table to determine the appropriate size rug you should buy.
Bedroom – Usually it is better to place several smaller rugs in a bedroom than one large room-sized one. Most of the large rug will be under the bed and serve no purpose. Three rugs, one at the foot and two on the sides of the bed, will compliment the room’s décor and provide you greater versatility.
Hallways & Entrances – If a standard rectangular or oval area rug does not suitably fill a hallway or entrance, consider using a longer runner. These rugs are typically 2’ to 3’ wide and can be found in a variety of lengths up to 12’ or more. Custom lengths are available as well.
